November 13, 2013 - Creating a Senior Friendly Home - by Ann Girard
As we age, many ordinary things become difficult for us that younger generations don’t have to face. With spring cleaning around the corner, now is a better time than ever to get our homes organized to help us have happy, healthy lifestyles. With a few simple tips, our day to day lives can be filled with less stress and more efficiency. Here are a few ideas to consider:
-
Move kitchen items to eye level shelves and cabinets to reduce the need for stretching up high or bending down low.
-
Start using a medication box right away. Forming this habit now will make it easier when you really need it as you age.
-
Have grab bars installed in the bathroom, especially in the showers.
-
Use non-skid mats in the shower and in front of the toilet.
-
Remember that throw rugs pose a tripping hazard.
-
Use caution when using ladders, stepstools, and chairs to reach up high. Avoid doing this if possible.
-
Use large print items—clock, bathroom scale, address book, etc.
-
Use nightlights in frequently traveled areas (halls, stairs).
-
To help navigate stairs better, put colored tape on the edges of steps.
-
Install banisters on both sides of the staircase and make sure the stairs are well lit.
These are just a few ideas from Ann Girard to help make your home more safe and senior-friendly. Ann Girard, a physical therapist by trade has over 40 years of experience with elder care and is owner of Safe at Home Care, a home care placement agency serving clients in Boulder County.
